Last week I wrote Part 1 of an article by Harry Vaughan about ‘How to Pray for a Prodigal’. This week is Part 2……

Pray that their heart will become tender. Sin hardens the conscience. Ask God to make your loved one sensitive to His voice and unwilling to find peace in disobedience. Pray specifically for repentance. Don’t settle for temporary reform or emotional regret. Pray for genuine repentance that leads to a transformed life and restored fellowship with God. Pray with faith and perseverance. Many prodigals have returned after years of prayer. Don’t interpret God’s silence as His absence. He is able to reach where you cannot and speak when no one else can.

Finally, guard your own heart. Refuse bitterness, despair, or manipulation. Keep loving, keep praying in faith, keep trusting, and leave the timing with God. The Father who welcomed the prodigal home has not changed. His arm is still long enough to reach the far country, and His grace is still powerful enough to bring wanderers home.

This week I read an excellent post about how to pray for a prodigal. I wanted to share it as I found it very helpful - this is Part 1, and Part 2 will follow next week…..the author is Harry Vaughan.

“For… my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.” — Luke 15:24

Few burdens are heavier than watching someone you love wander from God. Whether it is a son, daughter, spouse, grandchild, or close friend, the temptation is to worry, manipulate, or lose hope. Scripture calls us to do something better - we are to PRAY. Pray for conviction, not merely comfort. Ask God to make sin bitter and righteousness attractive. Pray that the Holy Spirit will expose the emptiness of life apart from Christ. A comfortable prodigal seldom comes home. Pray they will get sick and tired of the pigpen! Pray that God will remove wrong influences and send Godly ones. Ask the Lord to break unhealthy relationships and place faithful believers in your loved one’s path. God often uses ordinary people to awaken a wandering heart.

Pray for circumstances that bring them to the end of themselves. The prodigal son “came to himself” only after reaching the far country. Sometimes the greatest mercy God can show is allowing someone to experience the consequences of rebellion. Part 2 next week…..

One of the most profound truths Jesus ever declared was that He is one with the Father. This was not merely a statement of agreement or shared purpose, but a revelation of His divine nature. Jesus perfectly reflected the Father's heart, character, and will. Everything He said, every miracle He performed, every act of compassion He showed, and ultimately His sacrifice on the cross, revealed exactly what God is like.

When Philip asked Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus replied, "Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father" (John 14:9). What a comfort this is! We do not have to wonder whether God is loving, merciful, or trustworthy -we simply look at Jesus. In Him we see God's compassion for the broken, His patience with the weak, His holiness toward sin, and His unfailing love for humanity.

Because Jesus is one with the Father, we can confidently place our faith in Him. His promises carry the authority of God Himself, and His invitation to follow Him leads us into a relationship with the Father.

How precious it is to read and meditate on Christ in the Gospels. As we know Him more deeply, we will also know the Father more fully, and our trust in God will grow stronger each day.

The church is a beautiful picture of God's design. Though we come from different backgrounds, personalities, ages, and experiences, we are united through our faith in Jesus Christ. Paul reminds us that there is "one body and one Spirit... one Lord, one faith, one baptism" (Ephesians 4:4–5). Our unity is not built on agreeing about every preference but on belonging to the same Saviour.

Just as the human body has many parts with different functions, so the body of Christ is made up of people with different gifts. Each member is valuable, and each has a role to play. When we serve one another with humility, patience, and love, the church becomes a powerful witness to the world.

Unity does not mean uniformity. God delights in our diversity, yet He calls us to live in harmony, forgiving one another as Christ has forgiven us. When disagreements arise, we are to seek reconciliation rather than division, remembering that love is stronger than pride.

Let us be asking the Lord to help us build unity wherever He has placed us. We can encourage a fellow believer, extend grace, and seek peace. As we walk together in Christ, the world catches a glimpse of His love through His united people.
