In our Women's Life Group we are currently studying the book of Jonah. In Chapter 2 we read that Jonah said, "When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord". 

Often we can act the same way. When life is seemingly going well we may take God for granted; but when we lose hope or are going through difficult circumstances we cry out to Him for help.  This kind of relationship with God can result in an up and down , inconsistent spiritual life. However a consistent daily commitment to God will result in a solid spiritual relationship with Him. This involves daily reading the Bible, daily talking with Him through prayer, daily living out our lives as He shows us through His Word and daily being sensitive to the Holy Spirit and what He is saying to us. These are spiritual disciplines we all need to continue to grow and develop in our lives. Through these things we will grow deeper in our love for the Lord with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength.

Have you ever wished you could actually see Jesus, touch Him and hear His words? Are there times you have wanted to sit down with Him and get His advice? Often people will say that they won't believe until they have seen Him in person. Thomas wanted Jesus' physical presence. but God's plan is wiser. He has not limited Himself to one physical body; He wants to be present with us at all times. Right now He is with us in the form of the Holy Spirit. We can talk to Him and find His words to us in the pages of the Bible. He can be as real to us as He was to Thomas.

Jesus wasn't hard on Thomas for his doubts. Despite his skepticism, Thomas was still loyal to the believers and to Jesus Himself. Some people need to doubt before they believe. If doubt leads to questions, questions lead to answers and the answers are accepted, then doubt has done good work. It is when doubt becomes stubbornness and stubbornness becomes a life-style that doubt harms faith.

I'm sure we are all encouraged by a leader who stirs us to move ahead, someone who believes we can do the task they have given us and who will be with us all the way. You may be thinking of someone right now who has been that kind of leader to you. But this is also what God is like. He knows the future, and His plans for us are good and full of hope

(Jer 29:11). As long as we understand that God, who knows the future, shows us what to do and when to do it, and is with us always as we fulfill His mission, then we can have boundless hope. This does not mean that we will be spared pain, suffering, or hardship, but that God will see us through to a glorious conclusion. 

Because of God's promise of a hope and a future we can call on Him in confidence. In difficult times and places we need not despair because we have God's presence, the privilege of prayer and God's grace. God can be sought and found when we seek Him wholeheartedly. Nothing that comes in our way can break the communion we have with Him. So be encouraged as you live out your daily life for Him - He is with us always.

We all need to be reminded that unforgiveness can creep into the secret places in our heart and we can give a place to it without even recognising what it is. That is why we must regularly (if not daily!) ask God to reveal any unforgiveness in us. The Bible says, "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear." One of the greatest iniquities we often keep in our heart is unforgiveness. It's very easy to do. We can even lie to ourselves and pretend it isn't there. We can also hide it from others.  Sometimes we don't see it because we try so hard to be the good person we want to be, and unforgiveness can be very subtle. But God always sees it, and He doesn't like it. He wants us to get rid of it, and sometimes He will even wait to answer our prayers until we do. 

The wonderful news is that through the incredibly powerful work of the cross we can be forgiven. Jesus has paid the price for us. Let us keep short accounts with God and regularly examine our hearts so that we don't hold any unforgiveness in our hearts. This is key to allowing the Holy Spirit to flow through us and lead us into all Christ has for each one of us.
