Wherever He went, Jesus exceeded people's expectations. A man looked for healing and Jesus also forgave his sins.  A widow was resigned to bury her dead son but Jesus restored her son to life. The religious leaders wanted a miracle so Jesus offered them the Creator of the miracles. A woman who wanted to be healed touched Jesus and Jesus helped her see it was her faith that had healed her. The disciples thought the crowd should be sent home because there was no food but Jesus used a small meal to feed thousands, and there were leftovers! The disciples wanted to eat the Passover meal with Jesus, their Master, and Jesus washed their feet, showing that He was also their servant. 

The disciples were expecting an ordinary day of fishing but they found the Saviour, Christ the Lord. This is Jesus, the Light of the world, Immanuel - God with us, who we celebrate in this Christmas season. Have you found the Saviour? - or will you let Jesus exceed your expectations this year as you ask Him to be Saviour and Lord of your life this Christmas.

The angel announced to the shepherds “good news of great joy that will be for all people.” (Luke 2:10) Good news. Great joy. For all people. That’s the wonderful proclamation of Christmas in a nutshell. The good news is that we have a Saviour, Jesus Christ. And it is good ‘news’ - not good ‘advice’ or good ‘teaching’ but good news!

God came to us in the person of Jesus. He came into the world and lived among us, died for our sins and rose from the dead. He offers us the free gift of salvation. It’s the best news! And it’s news for all people. No one is outside the reach of God’s grace in Christ. All are welcome to come to Jesus, no matter who they are, what they’ve done, or whatever their background - and receive His free gift of salvation. It is the greatest gift that leads to the greatest joy - the joy of knowing Jesus, of living with hope, of being adopted into God’s family and knowing that our future is secure in heaven.

Israel chose a path apart from God. As a result, they were exiled from their land and dominated by foreign nations, but the prophet Isaiah knew that sorrow and sadness would not have the final word. He looked forward to the day when Israel's gracious God would provide a Redeemer to deliver them from oppression and lead them to eternal joy. And He did - Jesus, our Messiah, Immanuel - God with us.

During this time of Advent as we head towards the celebration of Christ's birthday let us take time to remember that Jesus is our hope, love, peace and joy. In Isaiah 52:7 we read  'How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who brings glad tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, "Your God reigns!". It is a wonderful privilege to be able to share God's Good News with others - His news of redemption, salvation and peace.  Let us continue to pray for our unsaved family, friends, colleagues and the strangers we meet on the streets, that they too would come to know Jesus and invite Him to be Lord of their lives this Christmas.

Sometimes we may feel that if the Holy Spirit leads us, it will always be "beside the still waters" (Psalm 23:2). But that is not necessarily true. The Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness for a long and difficult time of testing, and He may also lead us into difficult situations. When facing trials, we must first make sure that we haven't brought them on ourselves through some sin or unwise choices. It can be good to get wise counsel from people who know us well to give us some insight into this. If there is no sin to confess or unwise behaviour to change, then we need to ask God to strengthen us for the test. We must seek the Lord diligently and be careful to faithfully follow the Holy Spirit wherever He leads. Nobody enjoys being tested but it is through testing that we can be purified, learn valuable lessons and draw nearer to God who loves us and walks with us through these times.
