God seeks people who will stand in the gap and pray where there is sin. In the book of Ezekiel God said, "I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one" (Ez 22:30)

The gap he is talking about is between God and man, and the person who stands in the gap is the one who prays. A gap was also a place in the protective wall around a field or a city that had been broken down and needed repair. God only needed one person to pray, and He couldn't find even one. So who are we 'standing in the gap' for today? It could be a prodigal child, sibling or parent. It could be for a friend who hasn't yet become a follower of Jesus. It could be for our government. Our job is to pray - God will do the rest. Let us come humbly before Him knowing that we can trust Him completely for the outcome.

Many sincere seekers for God are puzzled about what He wants them to do. The religions of the world are mankind's attempts to answer this question. But Jesus' reply to those who asked Him what they must do to "work the works of God" is brief and simple -  "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent."

Satisfying God does not come from the work we do, but from who we believe in. The first step is accepting that Jesus is who He claims to be. All spiritual development is built on this affirmation. Only once we believe do we then follow. We follow the words of Jesus, the works of Jesus and the leading of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Jesus is the Bread of Life. We must invite Him into our daily lives to sustain our daily walk and spiritual life. He is our all in all.

There's no doubt about it - John the Baptist was unique. He wore odd clothes and ate strange food and preached an unusual message to the Judeans who went out to the wastelands to see him. But John didn't aim at uniqueness for its own sake. Instead, he aimed at obedience. He knew he had a specific role to play in the world - announcing the coming of the Saviour - and he put all his energies into this task. John was in the wilderness when God's word of direction came to him - he was ready and waiting, set apart for God's service and he remained faithful to that calling. 

God has given each of us a purpose for living, and we can trust Him to guide us. John did not have the complete Bible like we do today to guide him, but he focused his life on the truth he knew from the available scriptures he had. Likewise we can discover in God's Word the truths He wants us to know. And as these truths work in us, others will be drawn to Him. God can use us in a way He can use no one else....as long as we are willing and ready.

As a farmer must wait patiently for their crops to grow they cannot hurry the process. But they don't take a season off and hope that all goes well in the fields. There is always much work to be done to ensure a good harvest. In the same way we must wait patiently for Christ's return. No one knows the day or the hour (Matt 24:36) and we cannot make Him come back any sooner! However while we wait there is much work to be done to advance God's Kingdom. Both the farmer and the Christian must live by faith, looking toward to the future reward for their labours. However in the meantime we must be sowing (sharing the Gospel), tending the crops (discipling) and caring for the land (prayer). As we do this the harvest will come and we will be ready for the Lord's return when His time is right.
