Everyone believes that love is important and studies show this in many different ways - for example a baby won't thrive without love. But love is often referred to as a feeling. In reality, love is a choice and an action as the well known 'love' chapter in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 shows us. 

God is the source of our love - He loved us enough to sacrifice His Son for us. Jesus is our example of what it means to love - everything He did in life and death was supremely loving. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to love - He lives in our hearts and makes us more and more like Christ. God's love always involves a choice and an action, and our love should be like His. He is our example - holy, just and perfect. If we truly know God, we will love as He does.

Billy Graham once said that no matter where he went in the world to preach the gospel he could always count on five areas of human need that afflict all people. 

The first is emptiness - we all cry out for something and we will never find it until we sincerely find God. The second is loneliness. People can be in a crowd or with friends and still feel lonely. We were created for God and without Him there is a sense of loneliness. Thirdly, there is guilt. All people have a sense of guilt and it can haunt them and play with their peace of mind. The fourth is fear of death. Even for Christians, death is a mystery however we know the promises that follow when we know Jesus in our hearts. Lastly there is deep-seated insecurity. People today clamour for security - material things are never enough. 

As Christians, we are called to sound the warning, to call sinners to repentance and to tell about what Jesus did for each of us when He died on the cross to pay for our sins. When we know Jesus in our hearts these afflictions need not be any longer, for in Him we find everything we need.

When Paul became a servant of the gospel, God gave him the ability to share effectively the gospel of Christ. In Ephesians 3:7 he writes "of which I became a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given to me by the effective working of His power." He acknowledges it is not in his own strength but in God's that he ministers.

We may not be apostles or evangelists but God does, and will give us opportunities to tell others about Jesus. With those opportunities He will also provide the ability, courage and power that we need to do so. Whenever an opportunity arises we simply need to make ourselves available to God as His servant. As we focus on the other person and their needs (not what we will say or how we will say it ie. take the focus off ourselves!) God will communicate through us. Our words will be caring, natural, loving and compelling and we can trust in the Holy Spirit to bring the conviction needed for change.

I am often asked by people about how they can know God's will for their life. When I ask them a few basic questions it can be obvious why they are having difficulty discovering it! 

I believe there are three key things we need to be doing if we are wanting to discover God's will for our life. The first is reading the Bible. This is the inspired Word of God - direct to each one of us! God will never lead contrary to His Word so we need to make every opportunity to read it - on a daily basis. The second is to pray. God leads us through the illumination of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. We can sense God leading us by the Holy Spirit. The more often we pray and wait on God, the better we will get at hearing and discerning His voice. The third thing is to be using our gifts and talents, being faithful and loyal to what God has given us. I love the scripture in Luke that says 'For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required'. Not everybody is called into full time Christian ministry but we are called to serve Christ where we are in our community or sphere of influence. If we are regularly applying these three principles in our life we will certainly have a much greater and clearer picture of the will of God for our life.
