Paul considered it a privilege to suffer for Christ. We do not by nature consider suffering a good thing! Yet when we suffer, if we faithfully represent Christ, our message and example affect us and others for good.

Suffering comes with benefits! It takes our eyes off our earthly comforts. It can point us to superficial believers who need help in strengthening their faith. It strengthens the faith of those who endure. It serves as an example to others who may follow us.

When we suffer for our faith, it doesn’t mean we have done something wrong. In fact the opposite is often true—it verifies that we have been faithful. Let us use times of suffering to build our character. Let’s not resent it or let it tear us down.

Most of us are familiar with the passage of scripture in 1 Corinthians - "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him"

We cannot imagine all that God has in store for us, both in this life and for eternity. He will create a new Heaven and a new earth and we will live with Him forever.

Until then, His Holy Spirit comforts and guides us. Knowing the wonderful and eternal future that awaits us gives us hope and courage to press on in this life, to endure hardship and to avoid giving in to temptation. Let us not forget that this world is not all there is but that the best is yet to come!

James wrote that "the tongue is a little member and boasts great things" (James 3:5). Here's an interesting little fact - did you know that on average a person opens his or her mouth approximately 700 times a day to speak!

David wisely asked God to help keep him from speaking evil - sometimes even as he underwent persecution. Jesus himself was silent before his accusers (Matthew 26:63). Knowing the power of the tongue, we are wise if we ask God to guard what we say so that our words will bring honour to His name. In these uncertain times with so much going on I know myself it is easy to get distracted and to say things that aren't honourable if it doesn't agree with my thoughts or opinions. I need to repent of those things.

We will find it much easier to bring honour to Jesus name if we talk or boast only of Christ! All other things are like sinking sand if we put them in the context of sharing the gospel with the dying world around us. This is my encouragement to myself this week and I trust it may also be to you.

The more a person fears and respects God, the more he or she will hate evil. Love for God and love for sin cannot coexist. Trying to hide secret sin means that we are tolerating evil within ourselves. Sin is serious not just because of what it does to us and to others, but because it is personal rebellion against God. He does not take sin lightly, and we shouldn't either. Sin separates us from Him.

If there is an area in our life that we have been withholding from God we need to come before Him in prayer, boldly confess it, and ask for His forgiveness and help in turning from it. Don't wink at sin! Make a clean break with it and commit yourself completely to God. 

A reminder that next Sunday evening November 7th,  at 7pm, we will be holding the Worship & Testimony service. All are welcome.
