I love Chapter 11 of Hebrews - the 'faith' chapter! I love how many of the paragraphs start with "By faith Moses did...." or "By faith Abraham did...." or "By faith the walls fell down.....". It has caused me to think how much of my life I live...."by faith".....

In Numbers 14 we read how Moses sent 12 men to explore the land of Canaan but how only 2 of them came back with a good report. The others were fearful and afraid. When fear takes over, our perspectives on many things can get distorted. For example our view of God may become skewed. God may seem small in light of our problems, or God's Word may seem empty in the face of our difficulties. Even our view of ourselves may get cloudy when our faith is weak. Israel said they felt like grasshoppers when in fact they were God's chosen people.

It's important to remember who we are in Christ. We are the body of Christ. We are sons and daughters of the King. We are called "a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession". When we know this we can step forward in faith, leaning on God's promises and power for all He has in store for us.

When we persevere with persistence and don't give up we win the prize. The Christian life was never promised as an easy way to live. Instead Paul constantly reminds us that we must have a purpose and a plan because times will be difficult and satan will attack. But we never persevere without the promise of a prize - a promise God will keep. 

And what is the prize? - a crown that will last forever, we will reap eternal life, we can take our stand against the devil's schemes, we will live with Christ and reign with Him and we know that He always remains faithful to us and always carries out His promises.

I read a great quote at the start of the year that went like this "A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one Year and out the other!" Some of you may have made resolutions and some of you may not. Neither is right or wrong. But one resolution that might be valid for all of us who are in Christ is this - listen!

Before the year starts to tumble away on us let's make a plan to talk and rest in Jesus as we go about our days. There's nothing wrong with making goals and plans for the future, but let's ask Jesus to make His presence a deeper reality as we go about our daily lives. We can claim the same promise that the prophet Isaiah gave Israel during some difficult days of their own:

"Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, "This is the way, walk in it," whenever you turn to the right hand, or whenever you turn to the left"

It is impossible to conceive how different things would have turned out if Jesus' birth had not happened when it did, where it did and how it did. For millions of people who have lived since, the birth of Jesus made possible not just a new way of understanding life but a new way of living it. It is a truth that, for twenty centuries, there have been untold numbers of men and women who, in untold numbers of ways, have been so grasped by the child who was born, so caught up in the message He taught and the life He lived, that they have found themselves profoundly changed by their relationship with Him. 

Have you experienced this for yourself? If not, this Christmas, I encourage you to make the decision to ask Jesus to be Lord of your life. He came into this world for you, and He died on the cross for you. He is Immanuel, God with us.
