I was listening to (and singing along!) Hark the Herald Angels Sing yesterday and one line jumped out at me - 'God and sinners reconciled'.  What an incredibly powerful phrase for all of humanity right there in those four words! After all, that is the reason God gave us His One and only Son. In 2 Cor 5:18 we read "...God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation."

So, as we look around this Christmas, remember all of this is from God, who reconciled sinners to Himself. Remember God also gave us the ministry of reconciliation, so whatever we do this Christmas, let's not be shy about reminding everyone that Jesus is the reason for this season!

Nothing deterred John the Baptist from his single-minded devotion to Jesus. From the beginning, John made clear that he was not the Messiah (Christ). His ministry was about pointing people to Jesus.

When Jesus came to John to be baptised, John’s voice rang out, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” Neither petty arguments nor the fact that his followers left him to follow Jesus caused John to lose focus. He simply said, “He must become greater; I must become less.”

At this time of year, children and adults often ask, “What did you get for Christmas?” How quickly we lose focus on Jesus, who came to give us salvation. Instead, we think of ourselves and the things we have or don’t have. Ask yourself today, “Am I full of joy because I have heard the Saviour’s voice?”

One day Jesus will return. Then all who have heard His voice and have faith in Him as the Saviour will join with God’s people, singing, “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him glory!”  What a day that will be!

Paul was content because he viewed life God's way. He focused on what he was supposed to do,  not what he felt he should have. Paul had his priorities straight, and he was grateful for everything God had given him. Paul had detached himself from the non essentials so that he could concentrate on the eternal. 

Often the desire for more or better possessions is really a longing to fill an empty place in a person's life. So how can we find true contentment? The answer lies in our perspective, our priorities and in whom we place our confidence and trust.

God has given His church an enormous responsibility - to make disciples in every nation. This involves preaching, teaching, healing, nurturing, giving, administering, building and many other tasks. If we had to fulfill this command as individuals, we might as well give up without trying - it would be impossible. But God calls us as members of His body. Some of us can do one task; some can do another.

Together we can obey God more fully than any of us could alone. It is a human tendency to overestimate what we can do by ourselves and to underestimate what we can do as a group. But as the body of Christ, we can accomplish more together than we would dream possible working by ourselves. Working together, the church can express the fullness of Christ.
